Friday 27 November 2009 The whale season is finally drawing to a close again this year with the water clearly warming up and sightings of whales starting to get a bit thin. It looks like this weekend will be our last weekend for the 2009 whale season, so if you have missed out so far, then be sure to book a seat for Saturday or Sundays cruise. If not, then you should be thinking about a dolphin cruise on board the Spirit of Jervis Bay or for a more 'upmarket experience' then take a look at our new 38' sailing catamaran, 'Discover Jervis Bay'. Wednesday 18 November 2009 The best all season, whilst only 3 whales, our skipper with 15 years experience described the cruise as the best yet. Our clients witnessed 3 whales hijacking our vessel . The calf was described as the smallest calf he had seen and 2 large adults play around our vessel almost at arms length. At one stage an adult spyhopped against our vessel and eyeballed our clients. Monday 2 November 2009 - afternoon A total of 6 humpbacks for this afternoon. Just as we were heading out of the creek the customers were greeted by a lot of breaching form the Mother and Calf that we had seen on the morning cruise. Then, in the middle of the Bay, the other 4 whales were just playing around and not caring less that we were there watching. It is a great feeling to see this as it shows that over the 20 years that we have been doing this, we do not seem to be doing anything wrong to disturb their natural behavior. Friday 9 October 2009 Well, the weather certainly has not been kind to us in terms of cruising conditions and has hampered our efforts to even get off the wharf for the last 3 days. However today conditions have eased up substantially and we have finally been able to make our way out into the Bay. We have had numerous reports of whales inside the bay, however they managed to allude us on todays cruise. The southern migration, combined with these sorts of conditions make it extremely likely that we will have a lot of whales in the Bay in coming days and weeks as the mothers look to rest and shelter their calves in the relative calm of Jervis Bay on the long journey home. Monday 14 September 2009 4 Humpback Whales, 6 Killer Whales and approx 20 Bottlenose Dolphins. Our clients had a cruise to never forget. On a grey overcast day with sloppy seas we saw 4 juvenile Humpbacks rolling and playing wide of Bowen Island. On our way home we were blessed by the sightings of yet more Killer Whales. Very distinct animals were sighted, being the dominant male, his 4-5 sub adults/females and a rare viewing of a Killer Calf. Monday 31 August 2009 What a wonderful day. There has been record sightings of Southern Right whales in the Wreck Bay area which is the Southern extension of Jervis Bay Marine Park. Today was a wonderful day, even for our crew as we saw 9 Southern Right whales along the cliffs of Jervis Bay and also right inside Jervis Bay. Generally 'logging', many whales seek comfort in shallow calm waters, pending birthing, mating or simply resting. The cliffs of Jervis Bay provided great refuge for the whales and spectacular viewing for our clients. To top things off, we had a special encounter with 2 curious Humpbacks who found it important to stop and take a closer look at the strange looking humans onboard. Truely a cruise to remember. Thursday 27 August 2009 A tricky sunny day for whale spotting. Llots of whales but they were playing a game of hide and seek. Wednesday 26 August 2009 6 Humpback Whales found close to the Ruined Lighthouse. She was dragging with her 3 white buoys, we alerted Authorities the Jervis Bay Marine Park and Booderee National Park who launched a search for her hoping to free her from the nets. Finally the seas have settled and enabled us to explore. Our cruise featured an initial sighting of Bottlenose Dolphins and scattered seals across the bay. The humpbacks were elusive, however our client did see a rare sighting of a adult Minke Whale. These animals are typical of what's seen on News reports from Whaling ships, so you can appreciate our excitement seeing one, so mature and no immediate danger to it. Our cruise again finished with our resident dolphins just outside Huskisson. Book your whale cruise here or call (02) 4441 6311 |

Over the past few days, severe weather patterns on the northern NSW Coast has resulted in our distant waters being sloppy and choppy, limiting our search for the Humpbacks. Good news though, as the weekend approaches the weather pattern will peak and move out to sea and conditions will subside. So look forward to seeing you all back on the water with Jervis Bay Whales. 2 Pilot Whales, a couple of seals and our resident dolphins. A tricky, yet warm sunny day with strong currents made the sightings difficult, but we managed to find our whales. The whales are migrating north and are favouring a long dive cycle to ensure efficiency in their travels. This, of course, is good for the whales but a bit more frustrating from our point of view, but that is what you get in 'wildlife world'. Book your whale cruise here or call (02) 4441 6311 |

We saw 2 Humpback Whales today. There was some debate with the crew whether our sighting was of a mother and a premature calf; one that is born close to our waters as opposed to the majority being born in northern, warmer temperate waters? Who knows? Regardless it was a great day out. Our clients also saw seals out near the heads of the Bay, and on the way home, our resident bottlenose dolphins were feeding just wide of Husky Creek. THE 2009 WHALE WATCHING SEASON IS HERE.
Jervis Bay Whales had its best year ever in 2008 and we expect more of the same in 2009! Take some time to scroll down through the amazing whale sightings from Jervis Bay and make sure you book your whale cruise with Jervis Bay Whales - the bays leading cruise company. Whilst it sounds cliched, 2008 was yet another record year for Jervis Bay Whales, with the records coming on many fronts. Well, its that time of year again, and if history is any guide, we expect to see even more whales in 2009. The most significant and most pleasing record (at least from our customer's point of view) was the fact that we totally blitzed previous years records of whale sightings right inside the calm waters of Jervis Bay. Whilst difficult to be totaly accurate, our numbers show that in the last month alone, that customers and crew had 339 individual whale sightings inside Jervis Bay; and you only need to scroll through the last months sightings below to see the quality of sightings and just how playful they were and how close the whales came to our vessel. On many cruises we had only left the wharf for less than 15 minutes when we would switch of the engine and the whales would swim up and put on a show. The Spirit of Jervis Bay has undergone a 'spring clean' in the summer months and we have installed two new large plasma screens which allow you to view the bow-riding dolphins on the way out, any whales that get up close and personal during the cruise, and then view our extensive footage from previous cruises on the way home. Thank you everyone who came onboard the Spirit of Jervis Bay in 2008 and enjoyed the experience of whale watching with Jervis Bay Whales. We look forward to seeing you all again this year onboard the Spirit of Jervis Bay in 2009. Book your whale cruise here or call (02) 4441 6311 |
