National Day of Action to Protect Whales

Saturday 12 May 2007

Jervis Bay 11 & 12 May

Whale watchers across the country are coming together for a Day of Action to Protect Whales. They will be calling on the Australian Government to do more to protect the whales that swim past our shores.

Australians love whales. More than 1.5 million people go whale watching in our country each year injecting close to $300 million into the economy. Yet the mainstay of our whale watching industry, the humpback whale, will – for the first time in 30 years -  face Japanese whalers’ harpoons at the end of this year as Japan is poised to expand its so-called ‘scientific’ whaling program in the Antarctic.

The National Day of Action brings people together to highlight the plight of the whales and to call on the Government to take legal action to stop the sham that is Japanese ‘scientific’ whaling.

This so called ‘scientific research’ has very little scientific basis. It threatens the recovery of vulnerable species of whales and the burgeoning whale watching industry in Australia and the South Pacific.

With the future of the world’s whales again in the balance when the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meets 28 – 31 May, this Day of Action acts not just to protest against Japanese whaling, but as a call to arms to the Government’s who are opposed to whaling to take legal action to bring Japanese scientific whaling to an end once and for all.

This National Day of Action is part of a Regional Day of Action with Events also taking place in New Zealand and Tonga.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION TO PROTECT WHALES

IFAW is again organising a National Day of Action to Protect Whales, Saturday 12th May.

The Jervis Bay community will be supporting the National Day of Action to Protect Whales, with a celebration of the impotents of these marine mammals to Jervis Bay and the rest of the world.

On Friday the 11th of May. 8:30am the official launch will take place with a gathering of key community members and school leader and students from Huskisson Public School.

We aim to create “A Sea of whales Tails” everyone can cut out of a whales tail and place it at the Moona Moona Creek Park Reserve on Friday morning and will remain during Saturday as communities all around Australia will be doing similar things as a collective group to support Whales. Saturday 12th May at midday there will be one-minute silence for the thousands of whales killed under Japan’s ‘scientific’ program in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary.

Marine mammal PhD Research Scientist Michelle Lemon and documentarian Scott Sheehan have been invited to the SYD national Day of Action to Protect Whales as representatives of the Shoalhaven.

Please call with any questions Scott   0413 718 111  or Matt 0410 418 216
